3/22/2009 -- Lanai, Hawaii
Nothing Like a Boat Ride
We finally left Maui and visited another island, Lanai. While I
have tons of photos to sort through, I decided I would start with
the end and show a couple of images of the return trip.
Above the ferry smoothly pulls into the safe, calm waters of
the harbor. Shortly after boarding, as we headed towards open
water, it was announced the first portion of the journey might be
"a little bumpy".
I hope no one tried to use the rest room during this slightly
bumpy section, if so, they probably found themselves in the
toilet, holding onto the rim, praying they didn't get sucked
downward and out to sea. I couldn't imagine a worse way to take a
boat ride.
The kids onboard decided they won a free trip on a
rollercoaster. As the boat pitched and rolled, kids screamed with
delight. I, on the other hand, tried to remember where the life
jackets were stored.

At one point, as our tickets were being checked by a member of the
crew, I noticed a giant wave filling the windshield. I was certain
the guy was going to be pitched into the floor, but he hardly
flinched when we hit the wall of water.
The fact that Lanai was within swimming range didn't make me
feel much better. Most of it was a sheer cliff and the idea of
being pounded into a rock wall by the Pacific Ocean time and time
again lacked appeal.
Upon docking John asked two members of the crew how bumpy the
trip was compared to others. Out of a scale from 1 to 10 they gave
it a 2, maybe a 3. They went on to say that 3-weeks ago one of the
trips was a 7 and that was quite an adventure.
